Amazing Deen

SubhanAllah, this deen-Islam-continues to amaze me each day. I go to school at SUNY Old Westbury, I like the school, it’s very diverse mashaAllah which is why I like it so much. There is always someone who asks me about the deen, strangers come up to me sometimes and ask if they can talk to me or ask me a question, and they are always very respectful too. Last week, Monday, I was praying Dhuhr in our MSA room and while I was praying someone was knocking on the door, I thought it was some brother trying to like signal to me to hurry up so he could pray, but when I was done I saw it was a girl standing by the doorway. She introduced herself and said that she was from a sorrority (Mu Sigma Upsilon to be exact). She was telling me how she was looking for a Muslim sister-hijaabi specifically- to speak at an event that they were holding that coming Wednesday. She said she talked to another sister but they lost contact and they still really would like to have the event, I told her that I will be able to do it if she would like and she was delighted. I met with her later that day and she told me that the event was juss going to be a discussion about hijaab, to educate people on campus and to break common stereotypes concerning hijaab. I was juss so stunned, a non-Muslim is going out of her way to learn about hijaab and teach others about it as well, subhanAllah I was really juss in such shock. I have had people who were interested and talked to me on campus and walk up to me and ask me questions, but this sorrority was setting up an event to learn about hijaab. I found out who the original sister was that they talked to and it was actually my really good friend so we went together to the event to talk about hijaab. Hamdulillah it was such a good experience and juss felt good, the girls were all so open minded, respectful and great people.
I was talking to my brother about the event and we were talking about how amazing this deen is. Even if we may not do as much dawah as we should, people are still attracted to the deen, their curriosity attracts them and they sometimes go out of their way to learn as much as they can. These girls set up an event to learn about our deen, our way of life, and they looked for us around campus to try to make this event possible. MashaAllah this deen is beautiful, so my advice to you is whenever you are in a public place take Ustadh Usama Cannon’s advice, say to yourself “I am the ambassador of this deen.” Make sure you have a good image, and be ready to answer questions-and please be honest. Sometimes people ask me such questiosn that really get me thinking and I juss say, “Wow, I really don’t know,” so I tell them I can look it up and e-mail them or I refer them to SunniPath or Why Islam? If you try to fluff out an answer it’ll show, be confident in what you know and what you beleive in, and if they ask you about something that you’re not sure about or don’t know juss say it-besides it’ll cause you to learn more about the deen, so it helps everyone out
Also, last Thursday I also attended an event called, “Community Under Seige.” It had the lawyers of Br. Fahad Hashimi and Dr. Aafia Siddiqi. I came a little late but it was still beneficial and wish that I was there for the whole thing. Basically, we need to get involved-get out there and do your part, whatever skill you may have put it to use and help out your brother and sister. Br. Ammar Adam spoke at the event as well, he brought up the point that what if you’re scared to get involved because they might do the same to you-he said think about it this way, would you rather be standing in front of a judge telling them why you stood up for Br. Fahad or Sr. Aafia, or would you rather stand in front of Allah explaining why you ignored your brother or sister in Islam. May Allah continue keeping them patient and inshaAllah reunite them with their families soon! For more information go to the following websites:

Also there is a video on Muslims Justice Initiative that talks about rights that you should know that we have. Take the time out and watch it here. It may be a bit corny but it’s kinda good.
That’s all for now.
Take care inshaAllah, du’as please!
